Foreign Language Email Settings

For sites that have the ability to send emails to customers (i.e.: I-9, Leave, and ADA), you may need to communicate in a language other than English.

By default, emails in Salesforce are encoded for “General US & Western Europe.” For languages like Lao, Mandarin, and Nepali, you will need to change your email settings. If you do not update your settings, your email will look like this:

To update your email settings to allow for emails in languages like Lao, Mandarin, and Nepali, please follow these steps:

  1. Go into your profile

  2. Select “Settings”

  3. Select “Advanced User Details”

  4. Select “Edit”

  5. Change “Email Encoding” to Unicode (UTF-8)

  6. Select “Save”

  7. Finished
You will now be able to send emails to customers in languages like Lao, Mandarin, and Nepali.

Notes:

  • When sending the email in Salesforce, you could bcc yourself to confirm what the customer receives.

  • Changing to Unicode (UTF-8) does not appear to impact English and Western Europe languages.
